Most people have never heard of a marine protected area. A Marine Protected Area - an MPA - is a designated zone of ocean or coast where human activity is regulated to protect marine ecosystems. There are thousands of them. They range from a few acres of coral reef to expanses larger than some countries. They represent decades of negotiation, scientific advocacy, and political will. On paper, they are among the most consequential conservation tools available. Here's what they can't do on their own: stop what moves across their boundaries. Ocean plastic flows with currents, accumulates against coastlines, and enters protected waters regardless of what the map says.
