Downtown Phoenix parking is already stressful enough, and now hundreds of parking meters are reportedly broken.
The City of Phoenix says between 300 and 500 parking meters are currently not working, with some drivers pressing the buttons only for the screens to stay completely dark.
Officials say the issue is tied to the meter batteries, but an ongoing battery shortage is making repairs more complicated. The city says the meters are under warranty, but there is no clear timeline for when all of them will be fixed.
Even with the broken meters, drivers are still responsible for paying for metered parking.
The city is recommending people use the ParkMobile app or pay online if they run into a broken meter. Parking enforcement can still see who paid and who didn’t.
Under Phoenix city code, there is no exception for broken or malfunctioning meters, meaning drivers could still risk a ticket if they park without paying.
