TWICE THE PRIDE: Episode 1. Most people have heard the name Marsha P. Johnson when talking about the origins of Pride. But not enough people know Sylvia Rivera. Sylvia Rivera was a Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 and Venezuelan 🇻🇪 trans woman 🏳️‍⚧️ , activist, and one of the most important voices in the early LGBTQ+ rights movement. She was on the front lines of the Stonewall Riots in 1969 and spent her life fighting for people who were often overlooked — especially homeless LGBTQ+ youth, trans youth, and queer people of color. She co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) alongside Marsha P. Johnson, helping provide shelter and support for unhoused queer and trans young people long before the world was ready to care about them. And despite all she did for the movement, Sylvia was often marginalized even within LGBTQ+ spaces because of her identity, her outspokenness, and her refusal to make herself smaller to make others comfortable.
