In 1952, Charlotta Bass became the first Black woman to run for vice president of the United States.
She had spent 40 years before that running a newspaper in Los Angeles — using every edition as a weapon against racism, police brutality, and injustice.
She was 70 years old when she accepted the nomination.
Her acceptance speech: "Win or lose, we win by raising the issues."
