92 years ago today, Congress authorized the creation of Everglades National Park.🐊
When the act passed on May 30, 1934, it set a precedent no national park had set before: this one wouldn't be protected for its scenery. It would be protected for its biology.
Today, Everglades National Park covers 1.5 million acres and holds eight distinct ecosystems, from mangrove forests to freshwater sloughs. It's the only place on Earth where alligators and crocodiles coexist!
It's also a reminder of something we come back to a lot: protecting a national park means protecting what's there, not just what's photogenic.
