Today is Eid al-Adha — the Islamic festival of sacrifice. But 800 years ago, the great poet and philosopher Mawlana Balkhi, known to the world as Rumi, taught that the deepest sacrifice was never Prophet Abraham’s son. It was something within ourselves: the part that always needs to be right, that looks away from others’ pain. Letting that go, he believed, is how we become more human, kinder to everyone around us.
