Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has entered the 'fountaining' phase of its eruption, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. Lava fountains have reached more than 650 ft (about 198 m) high, and are expected to be near peak intensity. Separately, a small whirlwind was observed forming near the volcano following the recent eruption. The USGS said the phenomenon was likely driven by intense heat from the lava warming surface air, causing it to rise rapidly into cooler air above. As this happens, surrounding air is drawn in, creating a localized circulation or convergence. #volcano #hawaii #kilauea
