A bear wandered into a residential area in Fukushima on Tuesday, injuring four people after attacking workers at a factory and later moving into nearby neighborhoods, Japanese officials said.
Police and fire services responded after an emergency call from the Fukushima Steel Works. Security camera footage showed a black bear chasing and knocking down an employee at the factory entrance before moving deeper into the complex and injuring a second worker.
The bear later entered surrounding residential streets, where it injured two more people, including an elderly resident, according to the fire department. Two nearby schools were closed, with classes moved online as a precaution while searches continued.
Authorities say bear encounters have increased in Japan in recent years, with more than 240 attacks and 20 deaths recorded last year. Experts link the rise to rural depopulation and expanding bear habitats.
