Somewhere along the way, we’ve normalized saying things online that we’d never say to someone’s face. We’ve convinced ourselves that if a person chooses to share their life online, they’re signing up to be picked apart, mocked, criticized, and bullied. But at what point do we stop and ask ourselves why we’ve become so comfortable treating other human beings this way? And while some people will brush them off as “just words” or “it’s just the internet,” I can’t help but think about the children watching. The next generation is learning how to treat people by watching how we treat each other. We tell our kids to be kind, we tell them not to bully, we tell them that words matter. Then we log onto social media and do the exact opposite…. We should be embarrassed by how normal online cruelty has become.
