The Columbus Blue Jackets selected left winger Alexandre Picard 8th overall in the 2004 draft. Coming off of a dominant second season (80 points in 69 games) for former QMJHL team, the Lewiston MAINEiacs, he was ranked 3rd in North American skaters and 3rd highest LW by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau. Andrew Ladd was ranked 2nd and was drafted 4th overall and Alex Ovechkin was the highest ranked LW and was drafted 1st overall. Picard played the lockout season with the MAINEiacs and had a junior career season high 85 points in 65 games; and put up 197 total points in 206 games. In his first professional season, Picard spent a majority of the season with the then AHL affiliate of the Blue Jackets, the Syracuse Crunch, and had 30 points in 45 games.
