He wanted people to feel what it was like to be there. Therefore, instead of relying on green screens and excessive digital effects, Nolan did something increasingly rare in Hollywood: he decided to film most of the scenes as realistically as possible. The aerial sequences are one of the best examples of this. To show the pilots inside the legendary Spitfire fighter planes, the team adapted real aircraft to accommodate cameras in the cockpit. While the actors appeared in the front portraying their characters, professional pilots controlled the real planes in the back.
