Can we ‘reprogram’ our gut bacteria to fight off disease? Every one of us has a unique microbiome that contributes to our health. Good bacteria are essential to the proper functioning of our digestive tract and immune system and act as a first-line defense against bad bacteria. Carlotta Ronda, a principal investigator at UC Berkeley’s Innovative Genomics Institute, is using CRISPR gene editing to tweak bacteria to improve our health (think probiotics) and help us fight infections. The techniques Ronda and her IGI colleagues are developing will eventually transform microbiome editing into a new therapy for many disorders.
