From being the “yoga coach” for the football team to teaching hundreds of physical education courses, Toni Mar’s 28 years at Berkeley are filled with inspirational teachings of yoga and wellness within the Berkeley community. Outside of Cal, she has given back to others through her diverse work in cardiac care and physical therapy at hospitals and sports clinics. Growing up in East Oakland, she is a staple of the Bay with wisdom from around the world. Her travels around Europe and Asia and her knack for cooking and baking dishes from diverse cuisines give her a deep appreciation for others’ cultures and strengthen her ability to connect with students from all around. She says, “Getting better is learned from your last mistake.” Like yoga, Mar acknowledges that things are not always easy, but every closed door has been a lesson on how to handle adversity.
