🌿 Nature holds stories everywhere — in forests, rivers, and sacred sites rooted in memory, culture, and connection to the land. Re:wild is celebrates the Native Toponymy project in San Basilio de Palenque 🇨🇴 where Afro-Colombian communities are reclaiming traditional names across 8,000 acres (3,300 hectares) of cultural territory. Founded by people who freed themselves from enslavement, San Basilio de Palenque became the first free Black town in the Americas. By documenting sacred sites, community spaces, and traditional landmarks, this work is also helping protect Colombia’s tropical dry forests, one of the country’s most threatened ecosystems. With leadership from the Palenquero community and technical support from amazonconservationteam and igaccolombia, this effort continues to expand to other Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities across Colombia.
