🐆 In Argentina’s Iberá wetlands, a species once lost is quietly returning. 🐾 The wild Jaguar population in the region has now reached 50 individuals—an extraordinary milestone in a landscape where Jaguars had been locally Extinct for over 70 years. Iberá is now home to the world’s first successful reintroduction of Jaguars into their former range. The effort, led by Re:wild partner rewilding_argentina, an offspring organization of tompkins_conservation, began in 2012 with the creation of the Jaguar Reintroduction Center deep within Iberá wetlands. 🐆 The first Jaguar release was in 2021, after years of preparation and coordinated work between scientists, governments, and conservation teams from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Today, Iberá is home to nearly 20% of Argentina’s entire Jaguar population.
