After three decades, Alabama finally has a new name atop its list of most popular baby boy names.
The name William was king from 1995 to 2024. But no longer.
John was Alabama’s top boy name in 2025 according to data from the Social Security Administration.
There was a lot of movement in the bottom half of the top 10, with names like Oliver, Hudson and Samuel moving up, and names like Henry and Elijah moving down.
Alabama’s top 10 looks very different compared to the national list. That list is led by Liam, which ranked fourth in Alabama. William ranked 9th nationally, and John wasn’t even in the national top 10.
In Alabama, there were 881 boy names included in the data. That’s less than the number of individual girl names included, despite there being more boys born than girls. Overall the trend in naming is heading toward more unique names, rather than a lot of children with the same name.
