One piece of paper could take away a child’s freedom.
In 1830s Britain, poor children could be bound as parish apprentices and sent into mills under contracts they did not choose.
The parish removed a cost.
The mill gained a worker.
And the child lost the right to leave.
This is Samuel’s story — not because he was rare, but because thousands of children were treated as paperwork before they were treated as people.
Clothed.
Fed.
Trained.
Protected.
That is what the paper promised.
But the bell woke him before daylight.
Drop a 🧾 for Samuel and the parish apprentices.
