They position themselves as the experts, and I simply don’t understand how someone can claim to know more about a location than the native people of the land. But perhaps their goal is really not to support the local economy. My life has been shaped by the poverty in Oaxaca and the lack of opportunities that ultimately resulted in my parents’ migration to the U.S. Now, when I think about using my platform to create solutions for my people, I always come back to this: job creation and helping stimulate the local economy for local and native Oaxaqueños.
