“I equated athletic strength with mental strength and failed to acknowledge the reality that even professional athletes like me can struggle.” At just 17 years old, Trudy Mickel found herself living her dream of representing the United States on the world ski stage. Less than a year later, she found herself fighting for her life in a children’s hospital after a battle with anorexia nervosa turned life threatening. Now an advocate for mental health and eating disorder awareness for athletes, Trudy states that mental health was a foreign concept to her throughout her athletic career. Years later, she has made it her mission to share her story in an effort to help other athletes understand that even at the highest stage, mental health battles can be very real.
