Historically, El Niño events have caused severe heat and droughts in regions of Asia and Australia, warmer and drier conditions in Canada and the northern United States and heavy rainfall and flooding in California and the southwest United States.
While scientists are confident there will be an El Niño, the strength of this year’s weather pattern is still to be determined, according to Oregon state climatologist Larry O’Neill.
