Google is boosting its multi-million-dollar investment in Iowa water-quality projects as residents across the state question how much water data centers built or planned by it and other companies will use and their impact on community supplies. The California-based tech giant said Wednesday, June 3, it will invest $1.7 million to help northwest Iowa farmers move 5,000 marginal crop acres into perennial hay or pasture over the next five years, cutting the polluting nutrient runoff associated with cultivation. The announcement came as eastern Iowa residents grilled Palo City Council members Monday night about how much water Google would use at a large data center on 545 acres the city is expected to consider annexing.
