June 3rd is World Bicycle Day! This day is a United Nations observance aimed at promoting the use of bicycles as modes of transportation. In the 1880s, bicycles were becoming a popular and convenient way to get around Sacramento. The local newspapers would regularly advertise in the early 1880s the Osborn & Alexander Company at 628 Market Street in San Francisco, one of the largest wholesale sellers of bicycles in Northern California. In this video, Howard letterpress printed three electrotypes (copies of woodcuts) in the Lewis Winter Collection. These were made in the 1890s. Winter often created cuts to be used for advertising purposes in newspapers and magazines. We are not sure why he created a cat, a frog, and a dog each riding a penny farthing though.
