Self-driving cars could soon become an even bigger part of everyday life in the Valley. 🚗🤖
Amazon announced that its autonomous vehicle company, Zoox, is expanding into Phoenix as it continues building out its robotaxi network.
The company plans to open a new depot in Phoenix along with a “Fusion Center” in Scottsdale that will help monitor and support its fleet. Before its purpose-built robotaxis hit the road, Zoox will begin mapping local streets using test SUVs with safety drivers behind the wheel.
Unlike Waymo, which adapts existing vehicles, Zoox designed its robotaxi from the ground up with no traditional driver’s seat, steering wheel, or pedals — the entire cabin is built around passengers.
Phoenix has already become one of the country’s biggest testing grounds for autonomous vehicles, and Zoox could soon join Waymo on Valley streets.
The company hasn’t announced when public rides will begin, but testing is expected to ramp up soon.
