Arizona might be known for the desert, but the state is also home to the tallest mountain in the Southwest. 🏔️ At 12,633 feet above sea level, Humphreys Peak just outside Flagstaff is Arizona’s highest point and nearly 11,500 feet higher than the lowest elevation in the state. The mountain sits within the ancient San Francisco volcanic field, the remains of a massive volcano that once towered even higher before millions of years of erosion shaped the landscape we know today. The hike to the summit gains roughly 3,300 feet of elevation over 4.8 miles, rewarding hikers with views that can stretch more than 100 miles across Northern Arizona on a clear day. What surprises a lot of people is the temperature difference. While Phoenix is pushing triple digits, Humphreys can be 30-40 degrees cooler and often holds snow well into the year.
