In some parts of Arizona, the ground isn’t just drying out — it’s actually sinking. 😳🌵 Decades of pumping groundwater faster than nature can replace it have caused the land beneath parts of the state to slowly compact. As that happens, massive cracks called earth fissures can form, stretching for hundreds or even thousands of feet. According to the Arizona Geological Survey, these fissures have been documented across multiple counties, including Maricopa, Pinal, Pima, Cochise, and La Paz. They can damage roads, canals, pipelines, and even homes, especially after heavy rains widen the cracks.
