Born in Cuba and raised in the United States, Pedro was diagnosed with HIV as a teenager. Rather than hide, he chose to educate. He spoke in schools, community centers, and eventually on national television about what it was really like to live with HIV at a time when fear, misinformation, and stigma were everywhere.
In 1994, Pedro joined MTV’s The Real World: San Francisco. For many Americans, it was the first time they had seen an openly gay young man living with HIV not as a headline or statistic, but as a person.
Viewers watched him fall in love. They watched him advocate. They watched him challenge ignorance with patience and compassion.
