This awareness day was established on the anniversary of the first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States, which occurred in 1996. On that day, members of the Intersex Society of North America showed up at the American Academy of Pediatricsā annual conference to denounce non-consensual infant genital surgeries, share their own pain, and demand that the medical industry take notice. ā
