I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico🇵🇷🇵🇷 Then I was raised in Newark, NJ, in survival mode, by a single mom, in a neighborhood where you learn to be tough before you learn to be soft. So now, I’m intentional about what I pass down. I have always been so prideful of being Puerto Rican no matter what space I hold. I teach my children our customs, our music, our history, our pride. Not as a trend. Not as a costume. But as identity. I refuse for them not to be proud of being Boricua🇵🇷. Watching Benito take the world’s biggest stage and show up fully as himself, in Spanish, with Puerto Rico in his heart, hit different. It reminded me that our stories don’t need to be hidden to be celebrated. And when my daughter sees moments like that… she learns something bigger than music. She learns that she belongs.
