“It’s for the children.” That’s the justification. But listen carefully to what is being proposed. Technology that can prevent messages being sent. Technology that can analyse content before it reaches another person. And if the tech companies don’t implement it voluntarily? The suggestion is that legislation will force them to. Whether you agree with the goal or not, that’s a significant shift. The discussion is no longer just about communication. It’s about who controls communication. At what point does a device stop being a tool and start becoming a gatekeeper? Today it’s explicit content. Tomorrow? That’s the question worth asking. This is why I continue to look beyond Digital ID itself and focus on the wider system being built around identity, communication, money and access. Most people are watching individual pieces.
