Kelvin Sampson took over a University of Houston men’s basketball program that was a shadow of its old self when he was hired in 2014.
A powerhouse in the 1960s and 1980s, featuring legends like Elvin Hayes and the iconic Phi Slama Jama squads, UH basketball had fallen into neglect.
Sampson worked to revitalize the program and its facilities, and is now leading the team to what could be their first national championship in men’s basketball.
“We know that this season is going to end either Saturday or Monday,” Sampson said. “We’re gonna do the best we can to take this as far as we can.”
