Kelvin Sampson took over a University of Houston men’s basketball program that was a shadow of its old self when he was hired in 2014. A powerhouse in the 1960s and 1980s, featuring legends like Elvin Hayes and the iconic Phi Slama Jama squads, UH basketball had fallen into neglect.
