This week, Mayor John Whitmire's administration announced plans to divert $2.6 million from a project to fix faulty lighting on bridges in Montrose. "The City of Houston does not have the money for decorative bridge lights," a spokesperson wrote in a statement. "Mayor Whitmire has other priorities, including a plan to fund the recently announced initiative to end street homelessness." The bridge lights were installed in 2017 but stopped working entirely by 2018. They provided lighting to six bridges crossing I-59. Houston City Council had allocated $2.6 million to the tourism-focused Houston First Corporation for a project intended to fix the lights.
