Cristina Rivera Garza won for her memoir “Liliana’s Invincible Summer: A Sister’s Search for Justice,” which details her return to Mexico City nearly 30 years after her younger sister was murdered by a former boyfriend. The book focuses on issues like domestic violence, courtroom corruption and gender violence, and is a mix of memoir, investigative journalism and biography. Garza, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1989, said she was surprised by the news of the Pulitzer. "I believe that this award belongs rightfully to Liliana," Garza said of winning the prize that is considered the highest national honor in journalism, letters and drama, and music.
