"Reality Bites" is considered a classic among Generation X. The movie, written by Helen Childress, who grew up partly in the Houston area, and was set in the city in addition to being filmed both in Houston and Los Angeles. Actor Winona Ryder played the aspiring filmmaker who documents the lives of her friends and roommates in the four-plex at 409 W. Clay St., with other well-known actors in the movie including Janeane Garofalo, Joe Don Baker, John Mahoney and Steve Zahn. The Montrose-area home that served as a setting for the romantic comedy will soon be demolished along with a pair of neighboring properties. The lots were purchased in 2022 by Sugar Land-based Aim Star Investments, LLC, according to information on the Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) website.
