On Wednesday, a U.S. Post Office in southeast Houston was renamed in honor of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillén, a soldier who died in Fort Hood, now named Fort Cavazos.
The Guillen family, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and community members were among those in attendance at the renaming ceremony at the post office located at 5320 Galveston Road.
Vanessa’s older sister, Mayra Guillén, thanked the community for their support and says she will continue to fight in Vanessa’s honor and for military members.
“I look back and see everything that’s been done, and it’s wow. It’s a blessing,” she said.
Vanessa Guillen’s story has led to legal reform after she was killed by another soldier in 2020. Army officials did not take action when Guillen was sexually harassed by the soldier.
One woman has since been sentenced to 30 years in prison relating to Guillen’s death. The I Am Vanessa Guillen Act also now makes military sexual harassment a crime.
