After days of outreach efforts to combat celebratory gunfire, the Houston Police Department received hundreds of calls reporting firearm discharges around the city on New Year’s Eve, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said in a statement.
HPD said it caught and arrested seven people suspected of illegally firing guns on New Year’s Eve, which was Sunday.
Three people reported being struck by stray bullets from celebratory gunfire and had non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police department.
The police department’s DWI task force targeting drunk driving arrested and jailed 104 drivers on DWI charges over the holiday weekend, from Dec. 29-Jan. 1, Finner said.
It was unclear Tuesday how many of those drunk driving arrests were made on New Year’s Eve.
