Houston's Hispanic residents – who account for nearly 45% of the city's population of 2.3 million – will soon have three times as many fellow Hispanics serving on the city's governing body after the elections of Mario Castillo, Joaquin Martinez and Julian Ramirez. All three will be sworn into office at City Hall in early January. Martinez said he's "excited" to see greater Latino representation on the city council and also about the prospect of potentially collaborating with Castillo and Ramirez to help address the needs of Houston's Hispanic residents. Castillo, is a former District H staffer who currently serves as the executive director of the Your Houston grassroots nonprofit organization. Ramirez, who did not respond to an interview request made through his campaign, is an attorney who served for 27 years as a prosecutor for the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
