Casa Ramirez FOLKART, which is located at 241 W 19th St., displays several vibrant altars inside the store around this time of year. The shop owned by Chrissie Dickerson Ramirez hosted workshops this October to help people learn about the Day of the Dead traditions and history. The store's educational vocation began when her late husband, Macario Ramirez, visited his grandmother in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. His grandmother had her own Day of the Dead ofrenda set up and the smell of incense filled the room. He then shared this experience with his siblings and, eventually, to those who visited his shop. "It just began to evolve with him. He had classes here at the shop since he started in '85. It's a tradition that people have embraced the more they learn about it," Chrissie said.
