An original study by Houston Public Media set out to answer whether bus stops ever reached dangerously hot temperatures and how effective bus shelters are at cooling riders during the hottest times of the day. Our investigation revealed the dangerously high temperature that Houston bus stops can reach. In a first-of-its-kind pilot study, we measured temperatures at 21 bus stops in late July and early August. In 73% of cases, temperature readings inside bus shelters reached thresholds that put people at “extreme” risk for heat illness.
