As the University of Houston prepares to close its LGBTQ Resource Center this week – in order to comply with a new Texas law that bans diversity, equity and inclusion programs at public colleges and universities in the state – another Houston school that is not bound by the constraints of Senate Bill 17 is offering to help fill the void. Rice PRIDE, a school-affiliated organization that supports and advocates for LGBTQ+ students at Rice University, a private school, extended an invitation this week to students at public colleges and universities in the Houston area and elsewhere in Texas. "I am so thankful of Rice being willing to open their doors for that," said University of Houston student Kaitie Tolman, the president of GLOBAL, an LGBTQ+ organization on campus.
