In the last two years, residents of Vicksburg Village of Shiloh in Missouri City have successfully petitioned to rename five streets, including Confederate Drive and Bedford Forrest Drive.
Donna Barnes lives on Prosperity Drive, previously named Confederate Drive. She remembers the day her neighbors held a joyous ceremony in celebration of the renaming of their street.
“We had a very nice ceremony here. It was just a really positive thing, because it truly does reflect the diversity of the neighborhood now,” Barnes said.
District B council member Jeffrey Boney called the original street names in the neighborhood, where many are Confederacy-themed, embarrassing for a subdivision where there is a mix of white, Black, Hispanic and Asian residents.
“You have to ask yourself why. Why would you name a community after such a dark part of history?” he said. “I consider (the changes) to be a win for the community and for the city of Missouri City.”
