The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday (June 3) elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe to join the 15-member UN Security Council from January 1, 2027 until December 31, 2028.
The contest for places was tough. Despite lobbying hard, Germany missed out on one of the two spots reserved for Western European countries, while the Philippines narrowly lost the Asia-Pacific seat to Kyrgyzstan.
