Months after Avenal voters moved to remove their mayor and three city council members, the city is still waiting to learn whether the four recalled leaders will step down. In late April, voters decided to oust the three council members and the mayor, and those results have already been certified. They have refused to step down, citing low voter turnout, and have claimed that people were misled into supporting the recall petition. An update on their next move could come when the Avenal City Council meets on Thursday. The standoff is not unprecedented. Last year, board members of a public utility district in the South Valley also refused to leave after being recalled or voted out of office.
