I've said it before and I'll say it again👇
Inclusion at school does not have to be the goal for every person with a disability.
Violet attends a non-public school that specializes in supporting students with autism. And I will be honest, for a long time I thought a separate school setting was “failing” my daughter.
But the longer she spent at her public school, the more I saw her confidence deteriorate, her mood change, and her academic skills stall.
The reality is that true inclusion (the kind that actually supports our kids and helps them thrive) requires resources, training, and commitment that most schools just don’t have yet.
We can continue to advocate and push for inclusive environments that truly support our kids, BUT if they’re not doing that right now, your child does not have to stay in that environment just for the sake of “inclusion.”
You are not failing your child by choosing what actually works for them over what looks good on paper. You know your child best 🫶
