This love story couldn’t happen today. Back in 1991 – before dating apps existed, when Portland (as well as the world) was a very different place – a Northeast Portland woman signed up for a Rose Festival program in which locals offered to “host” sailors when the U.S. Navy ships arrived for the annual event. The woman’s name reminded one sailor of a girl he knew back home in Michigan. That’s the only reason they met. She took him out for pizza. They chatted. It was all very casual and innocent.
