Mexican popstar Julieta Venegas just released a cover of Patita de Perro’s “La Niña Futbolista,” which encourages women and girls’ inclusion in soccer, for the FIFA World Cup, and she’s now facing so much hate that the official video’s comment section on YouTube has been completely disabled. Why? Because of machismo. Fútbol fans and users online are arguing that the song is “divisive” for its feminist message and saying that it’s the men’s team who will play in the World Cup, not the women’s. Now, Venegas’ social media accounts are flooded with people insulting her and the song.
