After facing permanent closure, Lake of the Isles skating rink in Minneapolis has been saved for another season along with several other outdoor rinks across the city. Last winter it was announced that the Park Board was planning to close five ice rinks due to climate change and rising costs. Neighbors collected nearly 3,000 signatures in support of the rinks prompting the board to develop a plan to restore the treasured outdoor rinks that had been cut in the previous budget cycle along with Lake of the Isles rink. A long-term policy to guide how outdoor ice rinks are managed as winters shorten is forthcoming.
