A new blue-feathered beauty is settling in nicely to her home in the Matilda R. Wilson Free-Flight Aviary at the Detroit Zoo. Meet Momma, a blue-throated macaw who is almost 18 years old. Momma had previously lived in a private home where she raised several offspring, inspiring her name. When her mate passed away, Momma was donated to a sanctuary in Missouri. There, she lived near other macaws and took part in an enriching training program. Now that she is here at the Zoo, our staff will continue this program to ensure a stimulating environment for Momma. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of why exotic animals do not make suitable pets and why we support the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Not a Pet campaign. Macaws require highly specialized care, significant resources and lifelong commitment — needs that are difficult to meet in a typical household environment.
