Construction is underway at our Thompson-Burro Meadow Restoration Project in Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, which will restore 128 acres of wet meadow and 3.5 miles of stream in the heart of Apache trout country. This is TU’s highest-priority restoration project in Arizona over the coming years due to its location within the Salt and Colorado River Basins and the area’s abundance of ephemeral, intermittent, and perennial streams – which are all particularly vulnerable in the arid Southwest. The 2011 Wallow Fire significantly impacted the project area. Many streams in the burn area experienced runoff from fire-impacted slopes and led to channel incision, erosion, and the loss of instream habitat. We will use process-based restoration structures in three creeks (West Fork Black River, Burro Creek, and Thompson Creek) to benefit the associated high-elevation wet meadows.
