🦩 Across Albania, thousands of people have taken to the streets carrying pink flamingos — a symbol of resistance. Protesters in the Flamingo Revolution are opposing proposed luxury development on Sazan Island. This Mediterranean coastline is one of the region’s last relatively untouched coastal landscapes — a vital refuge for Dalmatian Pelican, Greater Flamingo, nesting sea turtles, and the Critically Endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. The destruction is taking place within the Vjosa–Narte Protected Landscape, part of the delta of the Vjosa, one of Europe’s last wild rivers. In 2023, Re:wild supported local efforts in Albania to protect the Vjosa River from small hydropower dams and make it Europe’s first wild river national park. The designation protected the 168-mile waterway, but now where the river meets the Mediterranean Sea is at risk.
