Image of the week: Algal blooms in the Celtic Sea 🌊
Captured by the
#Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite on 25 May, the image shows phytoplankton blooms visible from space.
These microscopic organisms produce over half Earth’s oxygen and help absorb CO₂ from the atmosphere.
The cyan colour is likely coccolithophores, a plant-like plankton found in large numbers in the upper layers of the ocean.
